PXL Conventional Fire Alarm Control

Operation

3 Operating the PXL Control INTRODUCTION The PXL System contains many software-based features. These features are accessible through the interface on the PCM-1 which is located on the front of the unit (See Figure 21). The interface is protected and menu driven. It allows the to enter all software-selectable options. The interface has a 4 line by 20 character LCD display which maps functions to 8 keys. The interface also includes a 12 button alphanumeric keypad for special programming functions. The PCM-1 has the following 6 system status LEDs: Power Trouble Alarm Audibles Silenced Supervisory Partial Disable

Operation

OPERATION The PXL annunciates the following modes: • Alarm • Supervisory • Trouble • Normal

Alarm The PXL Display board lights the appropriate red zone alarm LED and the general ALARM LED to indicate to the that an Alarm condition exists. The following screen is displayed on the PXL: ALARM 1 OF 1: LOCATION ACKNOWLEDGE ALARMS>

NOTE: The PXL can record and display up to 5 zone alarms prior to reset.

Supervisory A Supervisory alarm condition is indicated on the PXL by the lighted SUPERVISORY LED and the appropriate zone LEDs. The following screen is displayed on the PXL: SUPV 1 OF 1: LOCATION ACKNOWLEDGE SUPV’S>

Trouble A Trouble condition is displayed by a lighted TROUBLE LED along with the appropriate LEDs corresponding to the zone in trouble. The following screen is displayed on the PXL: TROUBLE 1 OF 1: LOCATION ACKNOWLEDGE TRBL’S>

Normal The Normal Mode is the absence of any alarm, supervisory, or trouble condition. The POWER LED is lit in Normal mode when the system has AC power. The Alarm, Trouble, Supervisory, Audibles



Operation

Silenced, and Partial Disable LEDs are off, and the internal sounder is off. The following screen is displayed on the PXL: TIME COMPANY NAME PXL SYSTEM NORMAL <MENU

Program The Program Mode is used for system configuration, test, control, and history functions. When the PXL is in Program Mode, it does not indicate alarm or supervisory conditions. The System resets to normal mode after 2 minutes of front inactivity. When the PXL is in the Walk Test Mode, it automatically returns to normal mode after 20 minutes of inactivity.

Responding to a Fire Alarm HOW THE SYSTEM ANNUNCIATES FIRE ALARMS When a fire is detected on one of the initiating device circuits (IDCs), the PXL causes the System ALARM LED and the appropriate Zone ALARM LED on the front to flash and the system’s internal audible to sound. NOTE: Building occupants should follow the fire emergency evacuation plan approved by the building owner. Then alert the local Fire Department.

TO ACKNOWLEDGE ALARMS 1. Unlock and open the door. 2. System operator should ACKNOWLEDGE the Fire Alarm by pressing the ACKNOWLEDGE button on the display.

TO SILENCE THE NOTIFICATION APPLIANCE CIRCUITS System operator should SILENCE the audibles by pressing the SILENCE button. Subsequent alarm conditions from other zones will cause the audibles to sound again, DO NOT RESET THE SYSTEM. A fire official should locate the cause of the alarm.

TO RESET Press the RESET button. (The system will not reset until all alarms, supervisories, and troubles are acknowledged and all conditions are returned to normal.)



Operation

Responding to a Supervisory Condition HOW THE SYSTEM ANNUNCIATES SUPERVISORIES When a supervisory alarm is detected, the system causes the SUPERVISORY LED and one of the zone LEDs to flash and the system’s internal audible to sound.

TO ACKNOWLEDGE SUPERVISORIES 1. Unlock and open the door. 2. Press the ACKNOWLEDGE button to acknowledge the supervisory condition. The system SUPERVISORY LED and the zone LEDs on the front stop flashing and remain on and the system’s internal audible silences.

TO RESET The system operator should RESET the system by pressing the RESET button. (The system will not reset until all alarms, supervisories, and troubles are acknowledged and all conditions are returned to normal.)

Responding to a Trouble Condition HOW THE SYSTEM ANNUNCIATES TROUBLES When a trouble is detected, the system causes the TROUBLE LED and the appropriate Zone TROUBLE LEDs on the front to flash and the system’s internal audible to sound.

TO ACKNOWLEDGE TROUBLES 1. Unlock and open the door. 2. Press the ACKNOWLEDGE button to acknowledge the troubles. The system TROUBLE and the individual zone TROUBLE LEDs on the front stop flashing and remain on. The system’s internal audible silences. NOTE:

Acknowledged troubles will be reported again in 24 hours if they are not cleared.

TO RESET The system operator should RESET the system by pressing the RESET button. (The system will not reset until all alarms, supervisories, and troubles are acknowledged and all conditions are returned to normal.)



Programming

4 Programming the PXL Control INTRODUCTION The following instructions will assist the in programming the PXL System. In addition to the instructions, definitions of many of the PXL's features are also included for general information. Please note that the system is designed to guide the through the programming functions without the need of the manual. Soon after you begin to program the PXL you will find that you use this manual for reference purposes only. The PXL software provides direction for all functions. Press the blue Help (?) button on the interface at any point in the program to access the Help screens. These screens give a more detailed explanation of the function to be performed. The arrows (< , >) on the screen indicate the button to press to select a particular item.

Firmware Revisions This manual references PXL firmware Revision 4.0. Make note of the following information for proper system operation: • PXL systems containing two PPS-10M power supply modules must use PXL firmware Revision 3.0 or higher and PPS-10M firmware Revision 2.0 or higher. • PXL systems using the CANADA country code selections described below must use PCM-1 and PZE-4B firmware Revision 3.0 or higher. • PXL systems used as Remote Supervising Station Fire Alarm systems must use PXL firmware Revision 4.0 or higher.



Programming

SYSTEM STARTUP When power is applied to the System for the first time, the power light on the PCM-1 turns on and the System displays the following question:

DO YOU WANT TO CONFIGURE THE SYSTEM NOW ? Answering YES, by pressing the appropriate key on the interface, starts the Automatic System Configuration mode. This mode steps the through every System programming option with a minimum of instruction. Figure 22 shows how the Automatic System Configuration mode is mapped out.

Programming

If you have never programmed a PXL System, it is best to answer NO. When NO is selected in response to the above question, the system goes to the normal operating mode and the following events occur: • The system polls all system modules and records their addresses. NOTE: Addresses must be set before the program can be configured. • The system applies defaults to all of the program options as shown in the Table 13. (Generally, all zones are general alarm causing and they turn all NACs on steady. There is no mapping of zones to auxiliary relays.) • The system resets and begins normal operation. Alarm, supervisory, or trouble conditions are annunciated automatically and can be viewed in the display. If no conditions exist the display reports the following message:

PXL SYSTEM NORMAL • From that point on a MENU selection is always available on the display that provides access to the system programming section. NOTE: Access to MENU is denied if unacknowledged alarms exist. • Figure 23 provides the entire menu tree including the Program, Test, Control, and History options. The can use this tree at any time to determine the current location in the menu. • In order to make a change to the System configuration, the must first enter a code. The System default is 123456. To change a code, go to the Program section of the Main Menu. The new code must have a minimum of four characters and a maximum of eight characters.

System Programming and Testing • Follow the menu in Figure 23 to access all programming options. The defaults shown in Table 13 appear as the program functions are viewed on the display. • Follow the instructions on the display to change the default values. • Record the new settings in Table 13 and keep that record with the system for future reference.

FEATURES (Listed Alphabetically) Some of the features available in the PXL System are described in the following section. Each of the features is software programmable. The default conditions are highlighted in Table 13 and they remain active until changed.

SET AC FAIL SIGNAL DELAY - Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. requires all fire protection systems which communicate to a Central Station or report as a Remote Station to delay the transmission of AC Fail Trouble Signals by a predetermined length of time. The system default is a 6 hour delay which is used for Central Station. For Remote Station, use the 15 hour delay. The "no delay" option is used for local fire alarm. ALARM VERIFICATIONS - This History selection allows the to view any alarm verified zones which went through an alarm verification cycle and did not result in an alarm. ASC – AUTOMATIC SYSTEM CONFIGURATION - This System mode performs automatically when the System is turned on for the first time. The PXL first polls all the modules to determine the number of each type and their addresses. The is then asked DO YOU WANT TO CONFIGURE THE SYSTEM NOW? Answering NO sends the system into its normal operating mode where all new circuits operate in default program mode. Answering YES starts the Automatic System Configuration programming of the System. ASC leads the through the different programming functions. The default values of all programmable features are displayed and the has the opportunity to change each one. If no selection is made during the ASC routine, the screen will time out in 20 minutes and start its normal operating mode with all functions operating in default program mode. When a new module(s) is added to a system that is in operation, the ASC routine will run on startup. The will again be asked DO YOU WANT TO CONFIGURE THE SYSTEM NOW? Answering NO sends the system into its normal operating mode. All previous configurations operate as before; all new modules operate in default mode. NOTE:

Programming

In the Program menu, the Responding Modules option changes to Delete Modules. When the confirms that the modules have been removed, the menu selection returns to Responding Modules, and the trouble condition clears upon system reset. HELP - The Help selection can be accessed at any time by pressing the blue Help (?) button. The receives detailed instructions for the function that is currently displayed. There are 2 ways to exit the Help screen. The can do either of the following: 1. Press the Help (?) button again to return to the function screen. 2. Scroll through the help instructions and press DONE to return to the function after reading all instructions. HISTORY - This menu selection allows the to view a record of events in four categories: 1. Alarms and Resets 2. Supervisory Conditions 3. System Trouble 4. Zone Trouble Conditions Thirty events can be stored in each category. Events are stored sequentially. Once 30 events are reached, new events overwrite previous events. HISTORY CLEAR - This feature allows the installer to clear all history events from the system's memory. One operation clears history for all event types. This can be done after installation to clear those events associated with system start-up, testing, and troubleshooting. MAP ZONES TO RELAYS and MAP ZONES TO BELLS - Any zone can be mapped to any relay or any bell circuit with the following rules and exceptions: • The default map for all alarm causing zones is: all alarms map to every bell circuit. • Bell 1 map from all alarm zones cannot be changed as required by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. • The default map for all supervisory zones is: no mapping. • Do not map supervisory zones and alarm zones to the same bell circuit or relay. • Do not map supervisory or generic zones to non-silenceable bell circuits. • Zone to Bell or Zone to Relay logic is 'OR' only. 'AND' logic (cross-zoning) is not available.



Programming

MENU - The menu selection can be accessed at any time, unless unacknowledged alarms exist in the system. This selection gives the access to the Program, Test, Control, and History functions. PROGRAM - This menu selection allows the to program or reconfigure the System. • To change the custom message, use the INSERT and DELETE buttons to add or remove character spaces. • Use the LEFT and RIGHT buttons to move the cursor in the message field. When the cursor is at the selected location in the field, use the numeric keypad to add numbers and letters. • To select a specific character, press the key to which the character is assigned until the desired character displays on the screen. Note that after all of the characters assigned to a key display, the sequence of characters repeats if the key is repeatedly pressed. • The keys on the keypad have the following characters assigned to them:

• When the custom message field is completed, press the DONE button. RESPONDING MODULES - This Program selection allows the to review the system modules installed in, and reporting to, the PXL. SET ALARM VERIFICATION RETARD/RESET TIMER - The selection of the Alarm Verification feature results in a delay of the system alarm signal to the affected circuits. The total allowable delay is 60 seconds. This delay, the Alarm Verification time, is the sum of a builtin 6 second system delay and the programmed Retard/Reset time. The Retard/Reset time can be set between 15 and 50 seconds, with 15 seconds being the programmed default. (See the definition of Zone Types below for a further definition of the Alarm Verification Time cycle.) 1. To select the proper Retard/Reset time, begin with the Alarm Verification time required by the system owner or local authority.

2. Subtract the built-in 6 second system delay. Make sure that the result is equal to, or greater than the Detector Startup Delay from the Table below. If not, the Alarm Verification Time must be lengthened, or a new detector must be selected for the installation. 3. Select the Retard/Reset time in 5 second increments from 15 to 50 which is closest to your result. Example:

1. Alarm Verification Time required by building owner = 30 seconds -6 seconds 2. Subtract the built-in, 6 second system delay 3. Result = 24 seconds Select a Retard/Reset Time of 25 seconds. NOTE: All detectors in the table below, except the PE-3/3T and PE-11/11T, can be used for this application. The PE-3/3T and PE-11/11T Delay Startup is longer than the Retard/Reset time and therefore would cause the Alarm Verification time to exceed 30 seconds.

SET BELL CODES - This is a two-step process. First, individual bell circuits are set as STEADY, CODED, or NON-SILENCEABLE. Then, the code is selected one time for all coded circuits. NOTE:

If coded bells are chosen, any alarm will ring all coded bell circuits.

NOTE:

If coded bells are chosen for alarm notification, do not select coded bell type for any unique supervisory condition notification or waterflow alarm.

SET COUNTRY CODE - This Program selection allows the to select either USA (the default selection) or Canada as the country where PXL is installed. • If the selects USA, the PXL operates according to NFPA/ UL guidelines. (Supervisory zones are non-latching.)



Programming

• If the selects Canada, latching supervisory zones are enabled and the PXL annunciates events in the order of first to last in the LCD display. When a supervisory is initiated in a latching supervisory zone, the LEDs on the PCM-1 and PZE-4B blink until the supervisory is acknowledged. If the supervisory condition is removed from the zone, the PXL must be reset to remove the annunciation of the condition. SET CUSTOM MESSAGES - This Program selection allows the to assign custom messages to the System ID, Initiating Device Circuits, Notification Appliance Circuits, and/or programmable relays. The messages can be up to 20 characters long. The following screen appears on the display when the is programming custom messages:

CERBERUS PYROTRONICS < INSERT DELETE > < LEFT RIGHT > < MORE DONE > SET GLOBAL RELAYS - This Program selection allows the to set any programmable relay to operate on either any alarm, any supervisory condition, or any trouble condition. Global relays will not change state when a Generic zone is activated. SET NAC CUTOFF TIMER - This Program selection allows the to select the length of time the signaling devices will activate before they are automatically silenced. A selection of 0 disables the cutoff timer. SET NAC INHIBIT TIMER - This Program selection allows the to select the length of time the signaling devices will activate before they can be silenced. SET CODES - codes can have from 4 to 8 characters. Use the 12-button keypad to enter codes. Always make a record of codes when they are set. • Installer's code allows access to all functions. • Owner's code allows limited access, as shown in Figure 23. SET SYSTEM ID - In the normal screen, the second line of the display can be used to identify the installation by site name. The default is CERBERUS PYROTRONICS. TEST - This menu selection allows the to test various parts of the System.



Programming

ZONE TYPES - The PXL has the following 5 zone types. • General Alarm • Alarm Verified Zones • Generic Zones • Supervisory Zones • Reset Zone General Alarm is the default setting for all zones. Alarm Verified Zone and Generic Zone operation are described below. • Shorting-type input devices and smoke detectors are compatible with all zone types. • Manual fire alarm stations and smoke detectors can be mixed on zones where local codes allow. • On verified zones, the manual station reports alarms when activated, without delay.

Alarm Verification The Alarm Verification Feature provides the PXL with a way to an alarm from area-type smoke detectors. This feature can be used to reduce incidences of false alarms. Alarm verification is selected by zone. A detector supervised with Alarm Verification is turned off by the System immediately after it reaches an alarm threshold. The detector is verified for a length of time which must not exceed 60 seconds. After power is restored to the device, and for the next 60 seconds, if the detector once again reaches the alarm threshold the system will report an alarm condition. If after 60 seconds the detector has not alarmed, any detector which again reaches the alarm threshold will restart the verification cycle. See Figure 24 for a graphic illustration of the Alarm Verification Time cycle. CAUTION: Use only detectors which are subjected to air velocities of less than 100 feet per minute with Alarm Verification. Under dynamic air velocity conditions, smoke may be swept from a smoke detector after the initial alarm. That may cause a long delay before verification. Do not select Alarm Verification for such applications.

Generic Zone The Generic zone is activated (or alarmed) by the output from another control . This output should be made with a device connected across the Generic zone. When activated, it causes the notification appliance circuits to sound and the appropriate initiating Zone LED to light. When the input is deactivated, the NACs will silence regardless of any inhibit timer. The System alarm s do not change state. Do not map Generic zones to nonsilenceable bell circuits.

Reset Zone The Reset zone is activated by a device such as the Space Age Electronics Model DM4 shorting the zone. A momentary closure will cause the PXL System to reset.

Testing and Troubleshooting

5 TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING WALK TEST Important Inform the person in charge of the PXL fire alarm system that a Walk Test is to be performed and that part or all of the fire detection system will be disabled. It is also advisable (or may be required) to notify the fire department of the test. Use the Walk Test feature to test the entire fire alarm system in either of the following two ways: 1. When an initiating device is activated, the system notification appliances sound steady and the appropriate zone LED turns on for 2 seconds. or 2. When an initiating device is activated, only the appropriate zone LED turns on for 2 seconds. Notification appliances are not turned on. Note: Devices tested on supervisory zones will annunciate twice. The first time is when the device is moved to the off-normal state. The second time is when the device is restored to normal. The PXL automatically exits the Walk Test mode if there is no activity on the system for 20 minutes.




SYSTEM TEST Important: If the System is connected to the Fire Department, or activates an external System (for example, a leased line connection), disarm the related outputs before servicing to prevent activation. Notify persons in the facility that you are conducting a System test so that they can ignore any alarms that sound during testing. Be sure to reset the System at the end of the inspection. To ensure maximum safety, follow the procedure described below. To ensure proper and reliable operation, we recommend the following inspection and testing schedule:

Every Six Months 1. Check the sensitivity of each detector using the appropriate CERBERUS PYROTRONICSTM sensitivity tester (where applicable). 2. If the PARTIAL SYSTEM DISABLE LED is lit, check that all appropriate detectors are armed. 3. Activate a detector or alarm-initiating device. To test for Go/No Go operation, use CERBERUS PYROTRONICSTM Test Gas P/N 315-282747, following the instructions on the label. Check that the detector LED lights and that the proper indication is given at the Control . 4. that an alarm can be acknowledged and that the System can be silenced and reset (See Acknowledge Alarms on page 37). 5. the time and date setting of the System clock (See Set System Clock in Figures 22 and 23).

Every Year 1. Check that the System operates in accordance with specifications. 2. Perform any other applicable tests required by national or local fire codes.

FUSE REPLACEMENT IN THE PXL SYSTEM The fuses are located on the PPS-10M Power Supply module (See Figure 4, page 10). Fuse ratings are shown in Table 14.

APPENDIX C Configuring and Programming the PXL Fire Alarm System for Use in Canada Module Configuration The following restrictions on firmware revisions apply: • PCM-1 module must include PXL Revision 3.0 or higher firmware and PCM/PZE Revision 3.0 or higher firmware. • PZE-4B modules must include PCM/PZE Revision 3.0 or higher firmware. • PPS-10M modules must include PPS Revision 2.0 or higher firmware. • LED-3/-4 annunciators must include revision 2.0 or higher firmware. There are no restrictions on firmware revisions for the following: • PNC-2Z modules • PRM-4 modules • RSA series annunciators

Programming the PXL Whether programming the System from the Automatic System Configuration routine or in the Program Mode accessible from the Main Menu, the Country Code must be set for Canada. This will cause the first alarm, supervisory, or trouble condition to be continuously reported on the Liquid Crystal Display. Subsequent alarms will be stored in a queue and can be accessed through the review screen. The Canada Country Code selection will also cause supervisory conditions to latch until System reset. All other programming options follow the instructions in Section 4 (Programming) of this manual.



Appendix C

AUTOMATIC BATTERY DISCONNECT Canadian systems require automatic battery disconnect. In order to select this option, set Switch 5 on S1 of the PPS-10M to the ON position. Connect the battery to the PPS-10M through the supervisory relay. • Connect the NO to Battery+ terminal and Common to Bat+ terminal of the PPS-10M. • Connect Battery- terminal to Bat- of the PPS-10M. • If a supervisory relay is required, use a PRM-4 and configure the relay as a global supervisory.

APPENDIX D Silent Knight Model 5128/5129 Digital Fire Communicator Connected to the PXL Control Reporting PXL Control Conditions to a Central Station or PXL as a Remote Surpevising Station Fire Alarm System

OPERATION The PXL reports system conditions using the Silent Knight Model 5128/5129, a four channel digital communicator that reports alarm, trouble, supervisory, and miscellaneous status. When used with the PXL, the Silent Knight Model 5128/5129 uses the alarm, trouble, and supervisory channels. The miscellaneous status channel may be used to annunciate conditions other than fire.

INSTALLATION Remove all system power before installation, first battery and then AC. (To power up, connect the AC first and then the battery.)

Mounting Silent Knight Model 5128 Mount the Silent Knight Model 5128 within the PXL enclosure as shown in Figure 26. When mounting the unit in either the PSE-1 or PSE-2 enclosure, place the Silent Knight Model 5128 between the knockouts on the top of the right-hand side of the . Alternate mounting for the Silent Knight 5128 may include double-sided tape, velcro, or snaptrack.

Silent Knight Model 5129 The Silent Knight Model 5129 must be mounted outside of the PXL enclosure and within 20 feet of it. All electrical wiring must be in metal conduit.
