ïowever Delhi did appear centrestage at least once in the road to the British rise to power: in the controversial Indian Uprising of 1857. Debate has continued and will always go on about whether 1857 was actually the first Indian War of Independence or simply a mutiny. There is enough evidence to the fact that the Uprising had been planned for months before the actual outbreak. What did the revolutionaries in, apart from the fact that they failed to spread the word beyond Central India and Delhi, was that the Uprising did not go according to plan. It broke out before the appointed date! If D-day had gone as per schedule, the uprising would have broken out in many areas simultaneously and would have been very difficult for the British to control. ïowever as things turned out, trouble broke out sporadically in various places in May 1857 and there was little, if any, coordination happening. So, the British were able to curb it with relative ease.

Introduction -The revolt of 1857 was an important part in the history of India.Its causes were:Economic - the farmers in bengal had become bankrupt due to the economis policy of the british.They were forced to pay huge taxes for items of everyday use. Religious - The orthodox indians did not like the same behaviour towards them and the downtrodden in prison,like commom kitchen.The indian soldiers were forced to travel overseas to Great Britian which was considered as a taboo by the religions. istration - The british interferred in the old customs of istration.the indians were not taken in the istration of their own country. Social - The age old traditions like sati,child marriage,etc. were banned by the British.which added fuel to the fire of discontent. Immediate cause - At the barackpore cantonment, a soldier called Mangal pandey was hanged by the British for starting a revolt due to the rumour of the use of the skin of pigs and cows to make cartridges of the bullets. Conclusion - Thus, the revolt of 1857 was a major revolt which shook the british rule in india.

FAILURE OF REVOLT OF1857 LACK OF PLANNING0 LACK OFLEADERSïIP LACK OF ORGANISATION Movement without planning, organization and leadership is bound to be a failure. The revolt of 1857 was no exception. The revolt was supposed to have started on May 31, 1857 as decided by Nana Sahib and his colleagues. But an incident at Meerut whereby the soldiers had to bite cartridges made of pig fat and cow fat added fuel to the fire leading to the revolt breaking out early. The leaders had no made plans. The movement had no leader on top to guide people and command obedience. Every movement reqiures some sort of discipline and a leader to guide and help. But since the Revolt unexpectedly broke out on May 10, 1857, there is nothing much the leaders could do.

The Mutiny or Sepoy rebellion (1857± 1858), or, as it is often referred to in contemporary India or Pakistan, the War for Indpendence, changed the shape of the British empire. Before the Mutiny, British India was ruled through a chartered business corporation, the East India Company, under the fiction that they were the proxies of native princes. After the struggle, that fiction was laid to rest.
