TRADITIONAL SOIL CHARACTERITZATION
GEOTECHNICAL UNCERTAINTIES In every construction project, ground behavior has a major impact on the final structural design. For this reason, soil characterization is crucial during the pre-design stage. Traditionally, soil parameters are characterized by laboratory and in-situ testing. However, samples might not be representative of the entire soil domain and they are often altered during extraction and manipulation. Interpretation of these tests is not always straightforward, resulting in a high degree of uncertainty of the soil parameters obtained. Currently, the industry tackles the problem by applying safety factors in structural engineering design. This may minimize risk but the geotechnical uncertainties remain unchanged and the overall cost of the project increases due to over-dimension. Moreover, during construction, geotechnical uncertainties emerge as unforeseen events, causing delays, malfunctioning and even failure, jeopardizing people’s safety and the economic profit of the project.

OPTIMIZED PARAMETERS
Backanalysis is a methodology that overcomes the limitations of the traditional approach of laboratory and in-situ testing. This methodology is more representative and non-destructive in characterizing soil parameters. The characterization is based on comparing monitoring data (such as topography, inclinometers, sliding micrometers, piezometers, etc.) to a digital twin (numerical models) to provide a more accurate representation of the real soil behavior. We have developed DAARWIN, the only automatic cloud-based software that determines real soil parameters using real-time backanalysis during construction.
