Nikon D610 Camera s Guide, abbreviated (from camera manual) Exposure Modes Change by rotating the mode dial.  P—Programmed auto; camera automatically adjusts speed & aperture; different combinations can be selected by rotating main command dial (flexible program); an asterisk will appear next to exposure-mode indicator while in flexible program; to turn off flexible program, rotate main command dial until asterisk is no longer displayed.  S—Shutter-priority auto; select shutter speeds from 30s to 1/4000; rotate main command dial to choose shutter speed.  A—Aperture-priority auto; select aperture; for controlling depth-of-field; rotate subcommand dial to choose aperture.  M—manual; both shutter speed and aperture can be chosen; rotate main command dial to choose shutter speed, and sub-command dial to set aperture.  Scene—Mode options are Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close up, Night portrait, Night landscape, Party/indoor, Beach/snow, Sunset, Dusk/dawn, Pet portrait, Candlelight, Blossom, Autumn colors, Food, Silhouette, High key, and Low key.  U1, U1—-selected settings; make desired adjustments in P, S, A, or Mo modes, then save in Menu, Save Settings. Release Modes To change modes, press mode dial lock release, and turn mode dial.  S—Single frame  CL—Continuous low speed; 1-5fps; 100 shots max; will slow when buffer is full  CH—Continuous high speed; 6fps; 100 shots max; will slow when buffer is full  Q—Quiet shutter-release  QC—Quiet continuous shutter-release  [clock graphic]—-timer  [remote graphic]—Remote control  MUP--Mirror up; press shutter-release button once to raise mirror; press again to take photo; used for low light and tripod. Focus Mode Determines how focus area is selected in autofocus mode. Controlled by focus-mode selector on front of camera.  M—Manual; only use with lenses that do not autofocus.  AF—Autofocus. Change type by pressing the AF-mode button and rotating main command dial. o AF-A—Auto-servo auto-focus; camera selects single or continuous, depending on if subject is stationary or moving. o AF-S—Single-servo auto-focus; for stationary subjects. Focuses and locks when shutter-release button is pressed halfway. o AF-C—Continuous-servo auto-focus; for moving subjects. Focuses continuously while shutter-release button is pressed halfway.



AF might not perform well in little or no contrast, through fences or grids, high contrast, geometric patterns, many fine details.

Auto-Focus Area Mode Controlled by pressing AF-mode button and rotating sub-command dial.  Single-point AF—for stationary subject; focus is on subject in selected focus point only; this is automatically selected when manual focus is used.  Dynamic-area AF o 9-point—when plenty of time to compose photo, or predictable movement. o 21-point—subject moving unpredictably. o 39-point—subject moving quickly.  3D-tracking—subject moving erratically side to side.  Auto-area AF—subject automatically detected. Focus Point Selection 1. Unlock focus selector lock (on back of camera, upper right of screen); 2. Use focus selector toggle to select focus point in viewfinder; 3. Press OK to select; 4. Lock the focus selector. AE-L/AF-L button 1. Press shutter-release button halfway; 2. Press and hold AE-L/AF-L button to lock both focus and exposure; 3. Recompose photo and press shutter-release all the way. Exposure Metering Determines how camera sets exposure in P, S, A, and M modes. Control by pressing metering button on top right of camera, and rotating main command dial.  Matrix—Use for most situations; wide area of frame used.  Center-weighted—entire frame used, but center area gets greatest weight.  Spot—4mm circle centered on current focus point. Image Size (FX lenses) Press “QUAL” button and rotate the sub-command dial.  Large—6016x4016  Medium—4512x3008  Small—3008x2008 Image Quality (JPEG Compression) Menu: Press “QUAL” button and rotate main command dial.  NEF Raw, jpeg fine, jpeg normal, jpeg basic, NEF + jpeg available. ISO Controlled by pressing ISO button and rotating main command dial.  Can range from 100 to 6400; also Hi 0.3-Hi 2, and Lo 0.3-Lo 1.  ISO Auto automatically selects ISO; maximum can be preset in shooting menu settings.

White Balance Press “WB” button and rotate main command dial.  Rotates thru Auto, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, Shade, Choose color, and Preset.  Works in P, S, A, and M modes only.  White balance bracketing can be set in custom menu e6 Auto bracketing set. Depth-of-Field Preview To preview, press/hold depth-of-field preview button. Exposure Compensation Press “+/-“ button by shutter-release and rotate main command dial.  Works in P, S, A, and M modes only; adjusts from -5EV to +5EV; affects both flash level and exposure when flash is used.  Not reset when camera is turned off. Bracketing 1. Select type of bracketing (flash or exposure) in Custom Setting...e6 Auto Bracketing menu;. 2. Choose between exposure, exposure + flash, or flash only bracketing. 3. Choose number of shots in bracketing sequence. Press “BKT” button and rotate main command dial. 4. Choose bracketing increment. Press “BKT” button and rotate sub-command dial. 5. Frame photo, focus, and shoot. 6. Shutter release button must be pressed once for each bracket if in Single Frame mode. 7. To cancel bracketing, press “BKT” button and rotate main command dial until BKT icon disappears. Active D-Lighting Preserves details in highlights and shadows in one shot; use for high contrast scenes.  Active D-Lighting adjusts exposure before shooting; D-Lighting is for retouching via menu after shooting.  Turn on in Menu, Active D-Lighting selection. High Dynamic Range (HDR) Preserves details in highlights and shadows by combining two shots. Most effective with matrix metering. 1. Select HDR in shooting menu; 2. Select a mode (On/series or On/single photo); 3. Choose the exposure differential; 4. Choose amount of smoothing; 5. Compose photo, focus, and shoot. Built-in Flash  Press flash pop-up button.  Press the “(lightning bolt)” button and rotate main command dial to select flash mode. Works with P, S, A, and M modes only.

 

Pressing shutter release halfway will check exposure. Built-in flash angle can cover field of view of a 24mm lens, and has a minimum distance of 2 feet.

Flash Sync Modes  Auto  Fill flash  Red-eye reduction—pre-flashes for one second.  Slow sync—captures both subject and background at night or in dim light; may need tripod.  Slow sync + Red-eye reduction  Rear curtain sync—flash fires just before shutter closes; creates effect of stream of light behind moving objects; may need tripod.  Rear curtain + slow sync Flash Exposure Compensation Press the “(lightning bolt +/-)” button and rotate sub-command dial.  Adjust from -3EV to +1EV in 1/3EV increments.  Not reset when camera is turned off. To reset, turn compensation to show zero.  Will also adjust certain Nikon flash units such as SB-600. Self-Timer Mode Press shooting mode dial lock release and rotate shooting mode dial to select self-timer mode.  Recommended to insert DK-5 eyepiece cap to prevent light from entering via viewfinder and interfering with exposure.  Two seconds before photo is taken, lamp will stop blinking and beeping will become more rapid. Multiple Exposure 1. In Shooting Menu, select Multiple Exposure. 2. Select a mode (series or single photo). 3. Choose number of shots. 4. Choose amount of gain (on or off) o AutoGain On (default) will decrease exposure according to number of exposures recorded. 5. Frame photo, focus, and shoot. 6. Take the selected number of photos. 7. Multiple Exposure icon will blink until correct shooting ends. 8. Canceled if camera is turned off. Interval Timer Photos 1. In Shooting Menu, select Intvl Timer Shooting to make settings. 2. Choose starting time. 3. Choose interval. 4. Choose number of intervals and number of shots per interval. 5. Start shooting.  Shooting can be paused by pressing “ok” button; or turning off camera.



Tripod use is recommended. DK-5 eyepiece cap is recommended.

Live View  Live view selector is for either photos or movies. o Movie button does not work when photo live view is in use.  Press LV button to enter or exit Live View mode. Live View, photos  AF-area modes: Face-priority, Wide-area, Normal-area, Subject-tracking. Live View, movies  Press movie-record button by shutter-release to start recording. Press again to stop.  Microphone is on front of camera.  If shutter-release is pressed during movie recording, movie will end, photo will be taken, and view returned to Live View Movie.  Menu, Movie settings o Card 1 or 2 may be selected as movie destination. o Movie quality. o Microphone sensitivity or microphone off. Two-Button Reset By holding “ISO” and “+/-“ buttons (marked by a green dot) down for more than 2 seconds, these camera settings can be restored to default values:  Image quality – jpeg normal  Image size - large  White balance – ato > normal  HDR - off  ISO sensitivity – auto/100/sensitivity off  Interval timer shooting - off  Autofocus – AF-A  Focus point – center  Metering – matrix  AE lock hold – off  Bracketing – off  Picture control settings – unmodified  Flash compensation – off  Exposure compensation – off  Exposure delay mode – off  Flash mode  FV lock – off  Multiple exposure – off  Flexible program – off  + RAW - off Playback  Left/Right arrows move through photos.

 

Up/Down arrows show additional info about current photo. Choose card to play by holding BKT and pres-arrow during playback.

Photo Playback—Photo Information Displayed: Press multi-selector down to cycle through photo info:  Histogram  Basic Information  File Information  Shooting Data page 1  Shooting Data page 2  GPS data  RGB histogram  Highlights Up to 8 pages of info for each photo. Memory Cards  Must be formatted before first use. Format from menu, or by simultaneously holding the two “FORMAT” buttons until FOR appears, then press the two buttons again.  FAT32 is ed for cards over 2GB.  Manual contains a table of tested, approved CF cards from SanDisk and Lexar.  SD memory cards have a write protect switch on them. When in “lock” position, card cannot be formatted and photos cannot be deleted or recorded.  When two cards are inserted, display shows available space for Slot 1.  Use of second card can be selected in shooting menu. Slot 2 can be used as Overflow, Backup, or Raw Slot 1 + jpeg Slot 2. Clock battery:  Clock and calendar are powered by an independent rechargeable power source. Two days of charging via main batteries will power the clock for about 3 months.  If “CLOCK” icon flashes in control , clock battery is exhausted, and clock needs to be reset to correct date and time. Attaching lens: Keep mounting index on lens aligned with mounting index on camera. Rotate lens counter-clockwise until it clicks. Detaching lens: Turn camera off. Press and hold the lens-release button while turning lens clockwise. Charging battery:  When battery icon blinks, the shutter-release is disabled.  Use EN-EL15 batteries only.  Charger lamp will slowly flash as battery charges; stops flashing upon completion.  It takes about 2.5 hours for an exhausted battery to fully charge.

Cleaning Using Low- Filter Cleaning is performed by vibrating the low- filter. 1. Set camera down on its base. 2. In setup menu, select Clean Image Sensor. 3. Select Clean Now. Lenses:  U lenses are recommended.  U lenses can be identified by U s by the mount.  Type G and D have a “G” or “D” on the lens barrel.  Polarizing filters: C-PL circular polarizing filter must be used; linear polarizing filters cannot.  Use FX lenses for full area of sensor.  DX lenses only cover 24/16 area of sensor. o Select Auto DX Crop on or off in menu settings. Wireless Mobile Adapter  WU-1b adapter is compatible with this camera Error Messages/Displays:  fEE blinking: Lens aperture ring is not locked at minimum aperture.  Battery icon blinking: battery is completely exhausted.  Blinking solid black dot: camera unable to focus using autofocus; use manual.  -E-: No memory card.  Err: camera malfunction. Try to release the shutter. May need servicing.  F--: No lens attached, or non-u lens attached.  CArd--- flashing: Memory card is locked/write protected.  For flashing: Memory card is not formatted.  CLOCK icon flashing: C lock battery is exhausted, and clock needs to be reset to correct date and time.
