BAGHEERA AWAY WE GO TO THE JUNGLE BALOO OVER HILL AND VALLEY AND BROOK. BOTH WE’LL SET THE STAGE AND TURN THE PAGE AND OPEN UP THE JUNGLE BOOK. BAGHEERA SO SET THE STAGE! BALOO AND TURN THE PAGE! BOTH AND OPEN UP THE JUNGLE BOOK! JUNGLE MUSES COME ALONG AND HEAR A STORY STRANGE AND MARVELOUS AND TRUE. LET US TAKE YOU TO THE JUNGLE UNDER SKIES OF INDIAN BLUE. WOLVES DEEP INSIDE THIS LEAFY JUNGLE LIVED A LITTLE ORPHAN CHILD.
WOLVES THAT RAISED HER NAMED HER MOWGLI. SHE GREW UP TO BE THEIR PRIDE AND JOY. JUNGLE MUSES PRIDE AND JOY, PRIDE AND JOY. HAPPY WAS THE MANCUB MOWGLI, ALL THE JUNGLE’S PRIDE AND JOY. HAPPY WAS THE LITTLE MAN-CUB TILL THE TIGER GAVE A ROAR. SHERE KHAN (Roaring) GET THAT CHILD OUT OF MY JUNGLE! SHE CAN’T STAY HERE ANYMORE! JUNGLE MUSES THOUGH HER JUNGLE FAM’LY LOVED HER, LOVED HER MORE THAN WORDS CAN SAY, THEY KNEW MOWGLI WAS IN DANGER; MOWGLI MUST BE SENT AWAY. SENT AWAY, SENT AWAY, FROM THE TIGER WE’LL PROTECT HER, MOWGLI MUST BE SENT AWAY. ALL BET YOU’RE WOND’RING WHAT WILL HAPPEN. COME ALONG AND TAKE A LOOK. MOWGLI travels with BAGHEERA through the forest.) MOWGLI (stretching and yawning) Bagheera, I’m getting a little sleepy. Shouldn’t we start back home?
BAGHEERA Mowgli, this time we’re not going back. I’m taking you to a Man village. (A COCONUT TREE drops a coconut on MOWGLI, who catches it, breaks it open, and eats it.) MOWGLI But why? BAGHEERA Because Shere Khan the tiger has returned to this part of the jungle, and he wants to hurt you. (MOWGLI circles the COCONUT TREE, which sways its branches at him.) MOWGLI Me? But I’ve never even met him. BAGHEERA He hates Man. Man makes fire and hunts tigers with guns. MOWGLI Oh, we’ll just explain to him that I’d never do that. (MOWGLI wanders onstage, climbing and exploring during their conversation.) BAGHEERA You can’t explain things to tigers. MOWGLI But I want to stay in the jungle! BAGHEERA It’s not safe for you anymore. MOWGLI I can take care of myself! BAGHEERA (chuckling) Alone? I don’t think so. (yawning) Now, come down from there and get some rest. You’re going to need it. (The COCONUT TREE points to a comfortable spot. MOWGLI and BAGHEERA heed its advice and settle in. BAGHEERA falls asleep. MOWGLI, frustrated, curls up at the foot of the COCONUT TREE.)
MOWGLI Not safe for me anymore. Ha! KAA THE SNAKE COCONUT TREE WHAT A DAY FOR LITTLE MOWGLI! JUNGLE MUSES MOWGLI! COCONUT TREE HOW MUCH MORE COULD MOWGLI TAKE? TELL US NOW, WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN… JUNGLE MUSES ENTER KAA… ENTER KAA… ENTER KAA… THE SNAKE! (KAA appears with four coils, all hissing and rattling, and slithers over to MOWGLI.) KAA 1 Ssss-say now. What have we here? KAA 2 (giggles) Oh, it’s a Man-cub. KAA 3 A delicious Man-cub! MOWGLI Who are you? KAA 4 Why, I am Kaa. KAA 5 Sssssssooooo nice to meet you. KAA 1 I’ve been sssssssooooo hungry for visitors!
(KAA encircles MOWGLI, who stiffens, not sure what to do.) MOWGLI Let me go! KAA 2 Sssssssilly Man-cub! KAA 3 Don’t you trust me? MOWGLI No! TRUST IN ME KAA 4 But don’t you understand? KAA 5 I don’t want to hurt you! KAA (ALL 5) I just want to give you a big hug! Sssssss! Ah… Mmm…. KAA 1 TRUST IN ME, COILS TRUST, TRUST. KAA 1 JUST IN ME. COILS JUST, JUST. KAA 2 SHUT YOUR EYES
COILS SHUT YOUR EYES. KAA 2 AND TRUST IN ME. COILS TRUSSSSSS…T! ALL SSSSSS!! KAA 3 YOU CAN SLEEP COILS SLEEP, SLEEP. KAA 3 SAFE AND SOUND COILS SHHHHH. KAA (ALL 5) SLIP INTO SILENT SLUMBER, SAIL ON A SILVER MISSSSSSSST KAA 5 SLOWLY AND SURELY YOUR SENSES WILL CEASE TO RESIST. (COILS and JUNGLE MUSES get a little out of control with hissing) SHHH!
COILS & JUNGLE MUSES Sorry. KAA (ALL 5) Oh! Oooh! Yum! TRUST IN ME JUNGLE MUSES TRUST, TRUST. KAA (ALL 5) JUST IN ME. JUNGLE MUSES JUST, JUST. KAA (ALL 5) SHUT YOUR EYES JUNGLE MUSES SHUT YOUR EYES ALL AND TRUST IN TRUST IN ME, JUST IN ME. TRUST IN ME! (KAA hiss and squeezes. BAGHEERA wakes up.) BAGHEERA Hmm? What’s going on? Kaa! Hold it, Kaa! (KAA is about to squeeze even harder, but BAGHEERA slaps his nose. KAA uncoils and falls down, releasing MOWGLI.) KAA 1 (moans) Ooh. My sssssssinuessses. BAGHEERA Find your dinner somewhere else, you sniveling sneak!
KAA 2 Sssssso sssssory. (slinking off.) KAA 3 Sssssstupid panther. KAA 4 Thinks he’s ssssssso sssssmart. KAA 5 Sssssayonara, Man-cub. NIGHT INTO DAY JUNGLE MUSES 1 & 2 KAA, THE SNAKE OTHER MUSES KAA, THE SNAKE JUNGLE MUSES 1 & 2 SLUNK AWAY OTHER MUSES SLUNK AWAY JUNGLE MUSES 3 & 4 AND THE NIGHT OTHER MUSES AND THE NIGHT JUNGLE MUSES 3 & 4 TURNED TO DAY. JUNGLE MUSES 7 & 8 WHAT, INDEED? OTHER MUSES WHAT, INDEED? ALL MUSES MOWGLI HEARD… A STAMPEDE! (Sound of thundering elephant calls and gargantuan stomping. JUNGLE MUSES take cover as COLONEL HATHI the elephant enters, leading the ELEPHANT TROOPS in a march.) COLONEL HATHI’S MARCH HATHI HUP TWO THREE FOUR. KEEP IT UP TWO THREE FOUR! ELEPHANTS HUP TWO THREE FOUR. KEEP IT UP TWO THREE FOUR! OH, THE AIM OF OUR PATROL IS A QUESTION RATHER DROLL. FOR TO MARCH AND DRILL OVER FIELD AND HILL HATHI IS A MILITARY GOAL, ELEPHANTS IS A MILITARY GOAL. HATHI AND A HUP TWO THREE FOUR. DRESS IT UP TWO THREE FOUR. ELEPHANTS BY THE RANKS OR SINGLE FILE, OVER EV’RY JUNGLE MILE, OH, WE STAMP AND CRUSH THROUGH THE UNDERBRUSH
BABY ELEPHANT IN A MILITARY STYLE, ELEPHANTS IN A MILITARY STYLE! HATHI COMPANY! HALT! (The ELEPHANTS halt as MOWGLI catches up with the BABY ELEPHANT at the end of the line.) HATHI Inspection! Arms! (COLONEL HATHI turns to the BABY ELEPHANT, who stands at attention and salutes. MOWGLI does the same.) Well, a new recruit, hey? (laughs) I say, what happened to your trunk? (COLONEL HATHI pokes MOWGLI’s nose.) MOWGLI Hey! Stop that! HATHI Hah. (sputters) A Man-cub! This is treason! Sabotage! I’ll have no Man-cub in my jungle! MOWGLI It’s not your jungle! (BAGHEERA intervenes.) BAGHEERA Hold it! Hold it! I can explain. The Man-cub is with me. COCONUT TREE He’s taking her to the Man village. HATHI To stay?
BAGHEERA You have my word. HATHI Good. That’s where she belongs. And , an elephant never forgets. (huffs) Forward...march! (COLONEL HATHI turns and marches off with his troops. Crash offstage.) Three zillion pounds. And that’s my final offer! MOWGLI What happened? BAGHEERA I think he forgot to say “Halt!” MOWGLI An elephant never forgets, huh? (The COCONUT TREE giggles and shakes.) BAGHEERA Enough of this playing around! Now, let’s get out of here quick before anything else happens. You’re going to the Man village right now. MOWGLI Am not! BAGHEERA Are too! MOWGLI Am not! BAGHEERA Are too! (MOWGLI clings to the COCONUT TREE as BAGHEERA tries to pull him off.) That does it! From now on, you are listening to what I saw. Now, I am going to start walking to the Man village and you are going to follow me. Make no mistake about it, you are going home. (BAGHEERA stomps off. MOWGLI doesn’t follow.)
MOWGLI I am home, you mean old cat! And who needs you? I can take care of myself!!! (pause) Can’t I? (MOWGLI slides down against a big, gray boulder, and sits dejectedly.) BALOO THE BEAR COCONUT TREE MOWGLI SAT DOWN, SAD AND BLUE; DIDN’T KNOW WHAT HE SHOULD DO. ROCKS BUT THE ROCKY WALL WASN’T ROCK AT ALL (Suddenly, the boulder rolls over and speaks.) BALOO Hey! Get off my back! ALL BUT THE GREAT BIG BEAR, BALOO! MOWGLI (pushing away) Hey! You’re not a rock! BALOO (fending him off) Easy there…. MOWGLI (preparing to punch) Get outta my way! (MOWGLI grunts and groans as he tries to punch and kick BALOO, to no effect.) BALOO (laughing) Well, now. That’s pretty big talk, little britches.
MOWGLI I’m warning you. You’re asking for it! BALOO You want to fight like a bear? Go ahead, give me a big bear growl. Scare me. MOWGLI (gritting his teeth “ferociously”) Rrrr. BALOO Oh, boy. I’m talkin’ about a big bear. Right from your toes. MOWGLI (trying again) Grrrrraaaaaaaah! BALOO No, silly. Like this: GGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (BALOO sends out a roar that shakes the whole jungle, sending MOWGLI reeling into the bushes. BAGHEERA runs on.) BAGHEERA You were supposed to stay right behind me!!! MOWGLI I’m not hurt. BALOO Let me help you, there… (BALOO helps MOWGLI up.) MOWGLI I’m a lot tougher than people think! (Suddenly, MOWGLI jumps on BALOO’s back, tickling him mercilessly.) BALOO Hey! That’s not fair! (giggles)
No, no, now, that— (laughs) Ooo, you win. You win! Hey, you’re all right! What’s your name, kid? BAGHEERA Mowgli! And he’s going to the Man village right now. BALOO Man village? They’ll ruin her. MOWGLI Oh, Baloo, I want to stay here with you. BALOO Of course you do. BAGHEERA And just how do you think she will survive? BALOO How will she survive? (to the JUNGLE MUSES) How will she survive? Why, it’s easy! All you need are the bare necessities! THE BARE NECESSITIES BALOO LOOK FOR THE BARE NECESSITIES, THE SIMPLE BARE NECESSITIES. FORGET ABOUT YOUR WORRIES AND YOUR STRIFE. I MEAN THE BARE NECESSITIES, OR MOTHER NATURE’S RECIPES THAT BRING THE BARE NECESSITIES OF LIFE! (All jungle creatures except MONKEYS begin to emerge, dancing and ing the action.) WHEREVER I WANDER, WHEREVER I ROAM, I COULDN’T BE FONDER OF MY BIG HOME. THE BEES ARE BUZZIN’ IN THE TREE TO MAKE SOME HONEY JUST FOR ME.
YOU LOOK UNDER THE ROCKS AND PLANTS AND TAKE A GLANCE AT THE FANCY ANTS, THEN MAYBE TRY A FEW. THE BARE NECESSITIES OF LIFE WILL COME TO YOU. THEY’LL COME TO YOU. (BAGHEERA observes the dancing, disgusted, and tries to pull MOWGLI away.) BAGHEERA Of all the ridiculous… (noticing tracks on the ground) Baloo, do you see these tiger tracks? Shere Khan is right on our trail! I’ve got to check this out. BALOO (slapping him on the back) Don’t you worry, Baggy! Go on ahead. Little buddy’s safe with me! BAGHEERA (skeptical, to MOWGLI) Don’t move. (Bagheera exits) BALOO (to MOWGLI) We won’t move…but we can groove! C’mon, little buddy…let’s show ‘em how it’s done! MOWGLI WHEREVER I WANDER, WHEREVER I ROAM, I COULDN’T BE FONDER OF MY BIG HOME. MOWGLI & BALOO (BEES begin buzzing) THE BEES ARE BUZZIN’ IN THE TREE TO MAKE SOME HONEY JUST FOR ME. ALL YOU LOOK UNDER THE ROCKS AND PLANTS AND TAKE A GLANCE AT THE FANCY ANTS, THEN MAYBE TRY A FEW.
MOWGLI DON’T MIND IF I DO! ALL YEAH! THE BARE NECESSITIES OF LIFE WILL COME TO YOU. (Unseen by BALOO and the jungle creatures, a group of shifty MONKEYS tiptoe on and grab MOWGLI.) JUNGLE MUSES THEY’LL COME TO YOU! ALL OTHERS THEY’LL COME TO YOU. MOWGLI (struggling to be heard over the singing) Hey, let go! JUNGLE MUSES THEY’LL COME TO YOU! ALL OTHERS THEY’LL COME TO YOU. BALOO (Lost in the groove) Yeah, man—let go! JUNGLE MUSES THEY’LL COME TO YOU! ALL THEY’LL COME TO YOU! YOU! YOU! YOU! (The MONKEYS run off with MOWGLI.) THE BARE NECESSITIES OF LIFE! OH, YEAH! (The jungle creatures collapse in an exhausted heap.)
BALOO Beautiful, beautiful! Now that’s what I call some swinging jungle rhythm, eh, Mowgli? (BALOO and the jungle creatures look around.) BALOO Mowgli?? Mowgli??? (Three MONKEYS re-enter and stick their tongues out. One bops BALOO on the nose.) MONKEY 1 Catch you later, grizzly bear! MONKEY 2 She’s King Louie’s Man-cub now! (The MONKEYS laugh and throw fruit.) MONKEY 3 Here’s some bare necessities for you, fuzz-face! ALL 3 MONKEYS Yeaaaah, man! (The MONKEYS run off, laughing.) BALOO Bagheeeeraaaa!!! (BALOO runs off. Scene shifts to the MONKEYS carrying MOWGLI to the ancient ruins.) MONKEY BUSINESS JUNGLE MUSES LOOKS LIKE THEY TOOK OUR JUNGLE FRIEND. THE MONKEYS TOOK OUR JUNGLE FRIEND! BAGHEERA NEEDS TO COME AND HELP US OUT. LET’S GO TO WHERE THE MONKEYS PLAY; WE’D BETTER HURRY ON OUR WAY. SEE WHAT THIS MONKEY BUS’NESS IS ABOUT. SEE WHAT THIS MONKEY BUS’NESS IS ABOUT. (QUEEN MONKEY fans KING LOUIE on a throne.) QUEEN MONKEY Presenting…Louie…King of the Monkeys!!! (MONKEYS applaud and cheer wildly, dropping MOWGLI at KING LOUIE’s feet.) KING LOUIE (laughs) So you’re the Man-cub. Crazy. MOWGLI What do you want me for? KING LOUIE Well, cousin, have a banana. (to MONKEYS) How do we explain it, monkey brothers? I WAN’NA BE LIKE YOU LOUIE NOW, I’M THE KING OF THE SWINGERS, THE JUNGLE V.I.P. I’VE REACHED THE TOP AND HAD TO STOP. AND THAT’S WHAT’S BOTHERIN’ ME. I WANT TO BE A MAN, MAN-CUB, AND STROLL RIGHT INTO TOWN AND BE JUST LIKE THE OTHER MEN. I’M TIRED OF MONKEYIN’ AROUND. LOUIE & MONKEYS OH, OOH, OOH, OOH! WE WANT TO BE LIKE YOU, OOH, OOH! WE WANNA WALK LIKE YOU, TALK LIKE YOU, OOH, OOH, OOH! LOUIE YOU SEE IT’S TRUE, OOH, OOH! AN APE LIKE ME, EE, EE, MONKEY 1 AND ME!

BALOO Oh, yeah, yeah. (BAGHEERA ties a grass skirt around BALOO’s waist and straps monkey ears to his head.) BAGHEERA Now, you distract that monkey, and I’ll rescue Mowgli. Got that? (BAGHEERA moves through the scene undetected, as BALOO bursts in and s the dance.) BALOO HEY! ZOMP BOPPA RONY LOUIE SHOO-BE-DI BOP, SHOO-BE-DI-BOP BALOO ZA-BA-DOO-BA-DI-BA ZA-BA-DI-BA-DOO-BA LOUIE OOH! OOH! OOH! OOH! BALOO HA! HA! HA! HA! LOUIE GRRRR! BALOO GET MAD, BABY! HODDLE ODDLE ODDLE ODDLE

(BAGHEERA successfully sneaks MOWGLI off. BALOO insists on an encore.) BALOO I gotta have some more of that swingin’ jungle beat! Hit it!!! I WAN’NA BE LIKE YOU (REPRISE) BALOO YOU SEE IT’S TRUE, HOO, HOO (WOO-HOO) AN APE LIKE ME, HEE, HEE (TWEEDLE-EE-DEE) CAN LEARN TO BE HU-HOO-MAN TOO HOO HOO-HOO-HOO HOO! CAN LEARN TO BE LIKE SOMEONE LIKE ME HEE HEE-HEE-HEE HEE (BIG FINISH!) CAN LEARN TO BE LIKE SOMEONE LIKE… (BALOO sees his disguise on the ground and realizes that the jig is up.) UH OH… MONKEY 1 It’s Baloo the bear! MONKEY 2 Yeah, that’s him! MONKEY 3 How’d that square get in there?! (BALOO runs off. The MONKEYS follow him, but are intercepted by SHERE KHAN, the tiger.) SHERE KHAN (deadpan) Boo. MONKEYS Aaaaaaaaagh! (The MONKEYS scatter) SHERE KHAN (deadpan) So nice to see you, too.
(SHERE KHAN sharpens his claws.) SHERE KHAN THE TIGER SHERE KHAN NOW I’M THE KING OF THE JUNGLE, NOT SOME CONFOUNDED APE! OBSERVE MY CLAWS AND FROM MY PAWS NO MAN-CUB CAN ESCAPE. I COULD END THIS STORY RIGHT NOW, BUT THAT WOULD BE SUCH A YAWN. IT’S MUCH MORE FUN TO LET HIM RUN (roaring) FROM MIGHTY ME! SHERE KHAN! SHERE KHAN! SHERE KHAN! ROARRR!!! (SHERE KHAN stalks about) Now…let’s see. Where can that little Man-cub be? (SHERE KHAN casually struts, then pounces.) Could he be…here??? (SHERE KHAN pounces. Nothing happens.) Could he be…here??? (SHERE KHAN pounces again. Still nothing happens.) Surely someone saw something? (SHERE KHAN looks to the audience, waiting for an answer. Nothing happens.) He can’t hide forever, you know. SHANTI leaps into the action, using her headband to tie a blindfold over SHERE KHAN’s eyes. SHERE KHAN hope blindly off.) BAGHEERA Because Shere Khan the tiger has returned to this part of the jungle, and he wants to hurt you. (MOWGLI circles the COCONUT TREE, which sways its branches at him.) MOWGLI Me? But I’ve never even met him. BAGHEERA He hates Man. Man makes fire and hunts tigers with guns. MOWGLI Oh, we’ll just explain to him that I’d never do that. (MOWGLI wanders onstage, climbing and exploring during their conversation.) BAGHEERA You can’t explain things to tigers. MOWGLI But I want to stay in the jungle! BAGHEERA It’s not safe for you anymore. MOWGLI I can take care of myself! BAGHEERA (chuckling) Alone? I don’t think so. (yawning) Now, come down from there and get some rest. You’re going to need it. (The COCONUT TREE points to a comfortable spot. MOWGLI and BAGHEERA heed its advice and settle in. BAGHEERA falls asleep. MOWGLI, frustrated, curls up at the foot of the COCONUT TREE.)

SHERE KHAN (deadpan) Boo. MONKEYS Aaaaaaaaagh! (The MONKEYS scatter) SHERE KHAN (deadpan) So nice to see you, too.
(SHERE KHAN sharpens his claws.) SHERE KHAN THE TIGER SHERE KHAN NOW I’M THE KING OF THE JUNGLE, NOT SOME CONFOUNDED APE! OBSERVE MY CLAWS AND FROM MY PAWS NO MAN-CUB CAN ESCAPE. I COULD END THIS STORY RIGHT NOW, BUT THAT WOULD BE SUCH A YAWN. IT’S MUCH MORE FUN TO LET HIM RUN (roaring) FROM MIGHTY ME! SHERE KHAN! SHERE KHAN! SHERE KHAN! ROARRR!!! (SHERE KHAN stalks about) Now…let’s see. Where can that little Man-cub be? (SHERE KHAN casually struts, then pounces.) Could he be…here??? (SHERE KHAN pounces. Nothing happens.) Could he be…here??? (SHERE KHAN pounces again. Still nothing happens.) Surely someone saw something? (SHERE KHAN looks to the audience, waiting for an answer. Nothing happens.) He can’t hide forever, you know. And rest assured, Man-cub, I’ll find you, wherever you are… (SHERE KHAN exits. BALOO and BAGHEERA enter from the opposite direction and put the sleepy MOWGLI down for a nap.)
BALOO Well, looks like she’s finally asleep. That was close, Baggy! BAGHEERA Too close, Baloo! Too close!!! That’s why we’ve got to get him out of the jungle. (MOWGLI wakes up, overhearing.) BALOO But I promised she could stay here with me… (pauses) But you’re right, Bagheera. I’ll tell her in the morning. We have no choice. She’s got to leave the jungle. MOWGLI But you promised! You promised!!! BALOO I know, little buddy, but you’ve gotta understand… BAGHEERA You must leave the jungle before it’s too late! It’s for your own good! MOWGLI Nooooooooooo!!! (MOWGLI runs off.) BAGHEERA Well, don’t just stand there! We’ve got to find him before Shere Khan does! (BAGHEERA runs off.) BALOO Oh, if anything happens to that little kid, I’ll never forgive myself. She doesn’t know the danger she’s in! (BALOO runs off in the opposite direction. The scene changes to MOWGLI running through the jungle.) MOWGLI RUNS JUNGLE MUSES SEARCH ON HIGH… SEARCH ON LOW…
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE MAN-CUB WITHOUT ANY PLACE TO GO? WHEREVER YOU WANDER, WHEREVER YOU ROAM, YOU COULDN’T BE FONDER OF YOUR BIG HOME… MOWGLI THE BEES ARE BUZZING IN THE TREES TO MAKE SOME HONEY… (weakening) JUST FOR… (MOWGLI collapses on a rock, exhausted. Two big vultures appear, pecking at him. MOWGLI snaps awake.) MOWGLI Hey! VULTURE 1 Oh, she’s alive after all. VULTURE 2 Unfortunately. (Both VULTURES laugh.) MOWGLI Go ahead, laugh. I don’t care. VULTURE 1 Aww, come on. What’s wrong? VULTURE 2 You know, you look like you haven’t got a friend in the world. MOWGLI I haven’t. VULTURES 1 & 2 Hey, you have lots of friends in the jungle! MOWGLI Really?

(MOWGLI remains next to SHERE KHAN) MOWGLI You don’t scare me. I don’t run from anyone. (BALOO enters quietly.) SHERE KHAN Ah, you have spirit for one so small. I’m going to close my eyes and count to ten. It makes the chase more interesting for me…One…two…
(As SHERE KHAN counts, MOWGLI runs to BALOO.) BALOO (whispering, to the JUNGLE CREATURES.) Come on everybody! We can all save Mowgli together! THE BATTLE BALOO I’LL GET HIS TAIL! AND TUG LIKE SO! JUNGLE MUSES WE’VE GOT SOME FRUIT THAT WE CAN THROW. ALL WE’VE GOT TO PUT OUR HEADS TOGETHER FOR THE GIRL WE ADORE: THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR! WOLVES AND WITH OUR CLAWS, HIS EYES WE’LL SCRATCH. JUNGLE MUSES & ROCKS AND WITH SOME ROCKS, HE’LL MEET HIS MATCH. ALL WE’LL GET THE TIGER BY THE TAIL AND THEN HE’S GONNA PAY. BALOO SOMEBODY’S GOT TO KEEP THE MAN-CUB OUT OF SHERE KHAN’S WAY. AND THEN HE’LL RUN OUT OF THE FOREST WITH A TERRIFIED ROAR… SHERE KHAN …SEVEN…EIGHT…NINE…TEN! Ready or not, here I come! (As SHERE KHAN pounces forward, BALOO grabs his tail. The JUNGLE CREATURES pelt him with fruit. BALOO holds on tighter. SHERE KHAN roars. MOWGLI runs for her life. The COCONUT TREE throws the JUNGLE MUSES some vines to wind around SHERE KHAN like a maypole. SHERE KHAN tries to break free and attack, pushing over the COCONUT TREE. The TREE’s coconuts and palm leaves fall off to reveal SHANTI, a young girl who has been disguising herself all this time. SHANTI leaps into the action, using her headband to tie a blindfold over SHERE KHAN’s eyes. SHERE KHAN hope blindly off.) ALL AND SHERE KHAN RAN OUT OF THE FOREST WITH A TERRIFIED ROAR… (SHERE KHAN meows.) THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE… THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR! THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR! THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR! (The JUNGLE CREATURES cheer. BAGHEERA enters and surveys the scene, amazed.) BAGHEERA What happened here? BALOO (To MOWGLI) We did it, little buddy! MOWGLI And now I don’t have to go to the Man village anymore! BALOO You bet! Hey, where did you get that blindfold idea? Brilliant!
MOWGLI That wasn’t me. BALOO No? Well, if you didn’t do it, and I didn’t do it, then who did? SHANTI Hello. (SHANTI gives a little wave. EVERYONE turns around to look at her.) MOWGLI Who are you? SHANTI My name is Shanti. I live in the village over the river. MOWGLI You mean…the Man village? SHANTI Is that what you call it here? (The JUNGLE CREATURES nod.) Well, it’s not just a Man village. There are women and little boys…and little girls just like you. BALOO Hey, have you been here all this time? SHANTI Sometimes I sneak into the jungle to have an adventure. I saw what happened…and how brave you were. (to the JUNGLE) How brave all of you were…I couldn’t just sit there and not help out! SHANTI’S FAMILY (from offstage) Shanti! Shanti! Where are you? You know you aren’t allowed to play in the jungle! SHANTI Uh oh. I’d better go. MOWGLI (stopping her) What does the village look like?
BALOO Nothing you need to know about— BAGHEERA Quiet, Baloo. SHANTI Would you like to come with me and see? (SHANTI reaches out her hands to MOWGLI, who looks back at his JUNGLE friends, not sure what to do.) BALOO Don’t go, little buddy! BAGHEERA Go ahead, Mowgli. MOWGLI Don’t worry, Baloo. I’m just going to go for a little while…okay? BALOO Okay, little buddy. BAGHEERA And Mowgli… MOWGLI Yes? BAGHEERA (clearing his throat to hide emotion) You may belong in the village… ALL …But you’ve always got a home in the jungle! THE BARE NECESSITIES (FINALE) BAGHEERA LOOK FOR THE BARE NECESSITIES, THE SIMPLE BARE NECESSITIES; FORGET ABOUT YOUR WORRIES AND YOUR STRIFE.
I MEAN THE BARE NECESSITIES, OR MOTHER NATURE’S RECIPES THAT BRING THE BARE NECESSITIES OF LIFE! ALL WHEREVER I WANDER, WHEREVER I ROAM, I COULDN’T BE FONDER OF MY BIG HOME. (BEES begin buzzing) THE BEES ARE BUZZIN’ IN THE TREE TO MAKE SOME HONEY JUST FOR ME. YOU LOOK UNDER THE ROCKS AND PLANTS AND TAKE A GLANCE AT THE FANCY ANTS, THEN MAYBE TRY A FEW.
