Introduction Rhythms Where would we be without rhythm? And what is rhythm exactly? It’s simply the timing of musical sounds and silences. Whereas pitch tells us the location of the sound we are after, rhythm tells us how long or short to play it for. In my previous book on rhythm we looked at music in standard 4 (four-four) time, but if all 4 music were in this time signature, the world would be a pretty boring place! So we’re now going to look at some rhythm in the following different time signatures to widen your repertoire! 35694488 First let’s recap note and rest values. As you know, you divide by two each time to get the next note value.

These are the most common values you will see in modern music. Of course you can go further to thirty-second, sixty-fourth and one hundred and twenty-eighth notes. But you will not see many of the last two. The only time you will see thirty-seconds will be in jazz or shred. You may know these notes by different names. I have used the American system, because it is simpler than the English version, with each name relating to the value of

the note it describes. For example in a bar of 1/8 notes, there are 8 notes. Just as there are notes, there are also rests (or silences). There is an equal rest value to every note value.

Sometimes you might see a dot to the right of the note, adding half of the current value to the note. So if you have a quarter note and there is a dot, this means we have: a quarter + an eighth = 1/4 + 1/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 When you see this, you count the value of 3 eighth notes. There are also triplets which are 3 notes in the time of 2. The best way to count these is to count 1- 2 - 3 or say tri-pl-et (both work as they have three syllables). You can have a 1/2 note triplet, 1/4 note triplet, 1/8 note triple, and 1/16 note triplet. We need to learn about time signatures to know how to count these notes. Time signatures specify how many beats are in each bar and which note value constitutes one beat. As we stated earlier, a lot of music is written in 4 time, 4 although many pieces are written with a different number of beats in each bar. Every time signature is written as one number stacked above another number. The lower number tell us the note value of one beat The upper number tell us the number of these notes in a bar 4

4 - shows us that there are 4 quarter notes per bar 6 8 - shows us that there are 6 eighth notes per bar There are three groups of time signatures: Simple time Compound time Complex time 2 3 4 6 9 12 5 7 3 4 4 4 8 8 8 4 8 16 Counting The traditional Western way to count is detailed below for the four time signatures we will cover. There are other systems from other cultures which you might help you if you want to research them. I have laid out a simple reference for each time signature below up to 16th notes. Faster than that, you’re on your own to think of a way to count them, as they are really fast! In 4 time, you count as follows, playing on the beat that is marked in bold below: 4 A whole note is counted out loud as: 1 2 3 4 2 half notes: 1 2 3 4 4 quarter notes: 1 2 3 4 8 eighth notes: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + (1 and 2 and etc) 16 16th notes: 1 e + a, 2 e + a, 3 e + a, 4 e + a (pronounced ‘one "ee" and "uh”’) In 3 time, you count as follows, playing on the beat that is marked in bold below: 4 A dotted half note is counted out loud as: 1 2 3 3 quarter notes: 1 2 3 6 eighth notes: 1 + 2 + 3 + (1 and 2 and etc) 12 16th notes: 1 e + a, 2 e + a, 3 e + a (pronounced ‘one "ee" and "uh”’) In 6 time, you count as follows, playing on the beat that is marked in bold below: 8 2 dotted quarter notes are counted out loud as: 1 2 3 4 5 6 3 quarter notes: 1 2 3 4 5 6 6 eighth notes: 1 2 3 4 5 6 12 16th notes: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + (1 and 2 and etc) As this last one is a compound time signature, you’re playing two sets of triplets (i.e. 6

beats in a bar) with each note having the value of an eighth. In 9 time, you count as follows, actually playing on the beat that is marked in bold below: 8 3 dotted quarter notes are counted out loud as: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 9 eighth notes: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 18 16th notes: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + (1 and 2 and etc) This time signature is very close to 6 time 8 as it is really 3 sets of triplets with each note having the value of an eighth. One thing to note at this point is that as you count out ‘sev-en’ the word has two syllables so can be used to count two beats. (You could of course shorten ‘seven’ to ‘sev’, followed by eight, nine. On the next few pages we’ll study different rhythms, starting with one bar phrases in the first section and moving on to four bar patterns in the second section, so that you perfect the time signatures in your playing. Start with a metronome on 40 beats per minute and then choose a note or a chord. Pick something SIMPLE, as you are focusing on the rhythm and not the chord or note (although you should listen to this to check it sounds great). Work on your time and your sense of groove. [Groove being that quality that makes you want to replay a song you have just listened to again and again and again.] If you can play with great time and groove, you’ll likely to get more opportunities to play in public, as good musicians seek out other good musicians. This book focuses on 4 beats per bar and gets increasingly more difficult as you progress. So get your metronome and a timer and start by trying to nail the rhythm you have picked for 5 minutes. Pros all do this, taking something simple and playing it repeatedly until it becomes second nature to them. How to Count time signatures using a metronome Most metronomes will allow you to accentuate beat one. This will help you keep better time and if you momentarily lose the plot, it’s easier to get back on track by listening for the heavier tone. Please see below for clarity on how to count for different time signatures: Time Metronome signature

3/4 Set metronome to three beats 5/4 Set metronome to five beats 6/8 Set metronome to two beats 9/8 Set metronome to three beats Count Three beats in time with the metronome click Five beats in time with the metronome click Each click is a triplet. Try counting 1 2 3 4 5 6. Beat 4 should land on the second click Each click is a triplet. Try counting 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. Beat 4 should land on the second click. Beat 7 should land on the third click Let’s move onto working on different time signatures. The sections below give you 50 one bar phrases, 25 two bar phrases and 25 four bar phrases for each time signature. So get your metronome ready and let’s go!
